Mawson believe that through the application of a consistent, rigorous, and active approach, superior investment returns to the benchmark will follow.
Whilst the portfolio has a value style, Mawson applies a macro level overlay to the investment approach. As the portfolio service aims to out-perform the benchmark, the MSCI AC World Net Index, in Australian dollars, on an absolute basis, the portfolio service is therefore driven to seek out and invest in undervalued companies that satisfy Mawson’s investment criteria.
Mawson’s active approach to investment prevents us from acquiring stocks in companies that do not fit the investment strategy, nor are we beholden to any particular industry or sector. This flexibility allows Mawson to seek out companies with superior growth prospects.
Mawson believes that active portfolio services, dynamic asset allocation and disciplined risk management rank equally to prudent stock selection.
Mawson aims to enhance returns through the utilisation of Exchange Traded Options for hedging and income generation purposes. Derivatives are not used for gearing purposes, and Mawson does NOT believe in holding any unbacked option positions. Mawson will not gear the portfolio or short sell securities. Mawson Financial Services Guide – Version 20220304 Page 9 of 12 Mawson’s Derivatives Strategy Derivatives usage. The only derivative contracts which will be used within the portfolio will be index and Exchange Traded Options (ETO’s). They will only be used if and when considered appropriate in any of these cases:
The risk measures associated with ETOs are combined with those in the balance of the portfolio in assessing their impact on the duration of the strategy. ETOs will be managed in accordance with Mawson’s risk management strategy.
The portfolio will not be leveraged by direct borrowing.
Derivatives strategy
Mawson uses options predominantly to gain income for the portfolio using ‘covered calls’ or writing call options over stock already held in the Portfolio. Writing call options is a popular strategy which increases the income of the portfolio. This is a tool available particularly for use in markets which are declining or flat. It is a way of managing the volatility risk in a portfolio as it produces income in the form of a premium received from the option.
Put options may be employed as a form of hedging with respect of long positions acting to protect against price falls below the specified strike price whilst the option position is open.
Call options may be purchased to have exposure to Australian and International securities, such as in the event where we have liquidated out of a physical position but wish to maintain some exposure over a particular time period.
The Mawson Market Neutral Managed Portfolio Service is offered through Separately Managed Accounts and Managed Account Services only to Sophisticated or Professional Investors per section 708 of the Corporations Act 2001(Cth.).
